A Chandos platter: a Chinese armorial oval dish finely painted in coloured enamels and gilt with the arms of Brydges, Duke of Chandos, quartering with gammon in pretence, the rim with a
blue enamel border, enclosed by gilt lines. Made for James Brydges, 3rd and last Duke of Chandos, whose grandfather, the 1st Duke, had his own large and elaborate Chinese Imari armorial service. Literature: D.S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, 1974, p. 751, no. W4.
