Prince Eugène Francis of Savoy-Carignano (1663-1736), with The Order of the Golden Fleece, was a distinguished field marshal in the Army of the Holy Roman Empire and of the Austrian Habsburg dynasty. During the War of the Spanish Succession he served Emperor Leopold I, achieving gains in Italy and securing victories at Blenheim (1704), Oudenaarde (1708), and Malplaquet (1709). Douglas Stewart references a lost Kneller portrait of the prince (J Douglas Stewart, Sir Godfrey Kneller and the English Baroque Portrait, 1983, no. 262)
